About Us

Rocinantes has initiated this digital telehealth project to address maternal and child health (MCH) care in Sudan. The project utilizes a telehealth system known as the Portable Health Clinic (PHC) to deliver quality healthcare services to underserved communities in rural Sudan. PHC is an innovative digital healthcare system jointly developed by Kyushu University, Japan, and Grameen Communications, Bangladesh. The Sudan Family Planning Association is serving as the local implementing partner for this project. The United Nations Population Fund has funded this program.

ROCINANTES (認定NPO法人ロシナンテス)
Rocinantes is a Japanese international non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to bringing essential medical care, water, and community support to underserved populations in Africa, particularly in countries such as Sudan and Zambia. It was established in May 2006 by Dr. Naoyuki Kawahara, a former Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs physician who witnessed the devastating lack of health services while working in war-torn Sudan and felt compelled to act directly to save lives and improve health outcomes.

Sudan Family Planning Association
The Sudan Family Planning Association (SFPA) is a leading Sudanese non-governmental organization dedicated to improving sexual and reproductive health and rights, maternal and child health, and the well-being of women, young people, and vulnerable communities. Established in 1965 by pioneers in obstetrics and gynecology in response to high maternal and neonatal mortality, SFPA has developed extensive experience in delivering family planning, maternal and child health, HIV and STI services, reproductive health education, and community-based healthcare. As a member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) Arab World Region, SFPA also undertakes advocacy, awareness programs, women’s empowerment initiatives, and efforts to address harmful practices such as female genital mutilation.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the United Nations agency dedicated to promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights and ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person can fulfill their potential. Working in more than 150 countries and territories, UNFPA supports governments and partners in strengthening maternal and newborn health, family planning, gender equality, adolescent and youth health, and population data systems. Through evidence-based programs, humanitarian assistance, and partnerships with local and international organizations, UNFPA works to advance universal access to reproductive healthcare and build healthier, more equitable communities.
